Cosm, a global technology company that builds end-to-end solutions for immersive experiences, is to create Europe’s first LED dome.

Prague Planetarium, in the Czech Republic, has selected Cosm’s LED CX System for the renovation of its projection dome.

The revamped 22m dome will have an 8K+ resolution and comprise more than 45 million pixels.

The CX System – which incorporates Digistar 7, the ‘world’s most advanced planetarium system’ – offers deep integration with Unreal Engine, allowing it to showcase high-level astronomy simulations and scientific visualisations.

The shared reality software platform will enhance the viewing experience by creating a level of brightness 100 times greater than found in traditional domes, while eliminating the cross-reflection typically seen in projection systems.

The integration of the CX System will also enable Prague Planetarium to develop in-house experiences such as multimedia presentations, immersive events and experiential fundraisers.

As well as the modernisation of the projection system, the 18-month project will also include an expansion of the exhibition areas and the installation of unique technology allowing the recovery of waste heat from the display.

The planetarium, which attracts 250,000 visitors a year will, reopen in early 2025.

Jakub Rozehnal, director of Prague Observatory and Planetarium, said: “Prague Planetarium is undergoing the largest reconstruction in its 65-year history.

“The selection of the supplier of the new LED technology was crucial for the entire planetarium modernization. Cosm is the only company in the world with technology that met the requirements of the international evaluation committee.”

Kirk Johnson, Cosm’s chief operations officer, said: “The Prague team has the technical ability and creative talent to make the most of the CX System and create levelled-up, never-before-seen experiences for their audiences and those around the world to enjoy.”

Last year, Cosm was chosen to supply an immersive 8K+ LED dome solution for the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History’s Jane & John Justin Foundation Omni Theater.
