Grindr has lost almost half of its employees after forcing staff that refused to adhere to its strict return-to-office policy to resign.

The LGBTQ+ dating app introduced a policy requiring staff to work in-person at least two days a week at one of its nine US hubs by the start of September, according to a report on Bloomberg.

The return-to-work mandate came two weeks after many of the company’s staff unionised via the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a complaint filed with US labour officials has alleged.

When presented with the return-to-office ultimatum, it is believed that about 80 of Grindr’s 178 workers chose to resign.

“This decision threatens the livelihoods of dozens of workers who do not live near their assigned team’s office,” the CWA said in an August update.

A representative for Grindr told Bloomberg the union’s claims were without merit and that it was “returning to the office in a hybrid model in October”.
